About EDG

What is EDG?
European experts in the field of wood drying have decided to form the European Wood Drying Group as a follow up process of the COST E15 activities. The structure and composition of EDG is designed to consider all professional aspects of wood drying, including wood science, engineering, know how transfer and education. EDG membership is open for wood drying specialists from research institutes, universities and consultancies. EDG also welcomes industrialists engaged with the design and manufacturing of dry kiln and moisture measuring systems as well as practitioners experienced in the drying of wood.

What are the aims and strategies of EDG?
The major aims of EDG are to improve know how and technology transfer between research and industry and to promote research in the field of wood drying. EDG will contribute to a better mutual understanding of the problems associated with practical drying and the scientific explanation of physical, chemical and biological phenomena observed in timber drying processes. EDG will not only act as an information exchange platform between its members, but will also support the dissemination of scientific results and practical know how to the European wood industry. By doing so EDG intends to support the production of high quality wood products which are fit for purpose. This, on the long term, will contribute to an increased, sustainable and effective utilisation of the renewable raw material wood.

Who should apply for membership?
European scientists working in the field of wood drying, university teachers engaged with teaching in the field of wood drying, consultants dealing with problems and questions related to wood drying, professionals from companies manufacturing equipment for wood drying and drying quality control, practitioners engaged with wood drying.

What kind of benefits will EDG provide to its members?
The EDG will run a web site, which offers contact addresses of members and experts throughout Europe and which will be used for dissemination of information between its members and to the interested public. Members of EDG will not be charged for locating scientific information on the web page. Industrial members will receive a discount on fees for links and information placed on the EDG web-page.

In regular intervals EDG will organise international seminars and conferences related to wood drying. EDG will support national workshops. By doing so, EDG provides a platform for dissemination of scientific results to its scientific members and a forum for information transfer where wood drying science can meet wood drying practice and vice versa.

Where to apply for membership?
Application for membership can be directed to the address stated below. EDG will start its activities after the final COST E15 meeting in Oslo (13. - 14. September 2004). A preliminary internal structure has been designed during a Task Group meeting in Hamburg. During the first General Assembly the Core Group of EDG will propose formal procedures for becoming a member.
